Two cavalry officers, Captain Edward Phillips and Lieutenant Yates of the 8th Hussars, stand beside their horses in this small salted paper print from about 1855. The 8th Hussars was a British light cavalry regiment that served in the Crimean War, and the subject places the picture on the Crimean Peninsula, where the regiment was stationed during the campaign. The print belongs to the Roger Fenton collection of Crimean War photographs. Fenton's 1855 work there was among the earliest systematic photographic records of a war, and its portraits of officers and their mounts show how the British army presented itself at the front.
