Lord Burghersh, the courtesy title of Francis Fane, later the 12th Earl of Westmorland, is named here as a lieutenant-colonel, according to the caption written on the back of the print. Roger Fenton made the portrait in 1855, while he was in the Crimea photographing British officers, soldiers, and the camps and harbors of the war. The salted paper process used for this print produced a soft, warm tone and required long exposures, which made posed portraits like this one a practical choice for early field photography. Fenton's Crimean work is widely studied as one of the first sustained records of a war made with a camera.
