The title, "The Pocket-Pistol - Equipped for Balaclava," is written on the back of this 1855 salted paper print and sets up a wry joke: the "weapon" in the name is a humorous stand-in for a soldier's personal supplies rather than a firearm. Roger Fenton made the photographs in this series during his stay in the Crimea in 1855, when the war was in its later stages and the Balaclava area was still a British base. The salted paper process, with its hand-coated paper and long exposures, gave his images a soft, warm tone. Fenton's Crimean pictures are among the earliest photographs of a modern war, and this one offers a lighter, more personal view of camp life.
