In this photograph, an officer and his servant pose at the close of a working day, and the phrase "His day's work over," written on the back of the print, sets the mood. The sitter was Lieutenant-Colonel Edmund Hallewell of the 28th Regiment of Foot (North Gloucestershire), photographed by Roger Fenton during the Crimean War in 1855. Fenton was documenting British camp life near Sevastopol, and he often arranged his sitters with a relaxed, staged air. The quiet domestic feel of the scene stands in contrast to the siege that surrounded it, and the warm, soft tones of this salted paper print are typical of the work Fenton produced in the Crimea.
