Lord George Paget commanded the 4th Light Dragoons, the regiment he led in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava in October 1854, when he led the second line of the attack. This salted paper print, dated 1855, belongs to the Roger Fenton Crimean War collection, and the record's subject tags also list horses, a reminder of how central the animals were to cavalry service there. Fenton made his campaign photographs in the Crimea in 1855, and portraits like this one preserve the faces of the officers who fought in that war.
