Few posters from 1917 look backward as much as this one does. Its title, "Honor the Brave," points to Memorial Day, observed on May 30, 1917, and the record lists the wars it commemorates: the Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the 1898 conflict with Spain. That sweep of American military memory was a deliberate appeal, placing enlistment for the war in Europe within a long national tradition of service. The print is a color lithograph, and its maker's monogram remains unidentified, so its artist is not known. Posters like this one were common in the months after the United States entered World War I in April 1917.
