Few posters from 1917 borrow an eighteenth-century figure as directly as this one, which shows a town crier in colonial dress calling Americans to a day of observance. The date, April 19, was the anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, and the poster links that earlier call to arms to the nation's entry into World War I, declared only days before. James Montgomery Flagg, already known for his magazine illustrations, produced the lithograph to rally support for military recruiting and preparedness. Its bold color and urgent tone reflect the recruiting campaigns of the period, a style Flagg would soon apply to his best-known image, the Uncle Sam "I Want You" poster.
