Uncle Sam's stern gaze and pointing finger, aimed straight out of the sheet, have made this the most recognized American recruiting poster of World War I. James Montgomery Flagg drew it in 1917 for the U.S. Army, and this color lithograph was copyrighted by the Leslie-Judge Co. of New York, publisher of *Life* magazine. Flagg had first used the figure on a *Leslie's Weekly* cover in 1916, and he reportedly modeled the face on his own. The poster appeared as the country moved into the war, and its slogan became one of the most familiar phrases in American culture.
