Here the Navy sells travel rather than battle. The slogan "Give the world the once over" sits beside a scene captioned India, where sailors appear as sightseers. Illustrator James H. Daugherty produced the design for the Navy Recruiting Bureau in New York in 1919, the year after the armistice, when the service was still recruiting. Wartime posters had stressed duty and sacrifice, while this one offers adventure and foreign ports to young men who might never have left home. The color lithograph shows how the recruiting pitch changed once the fighting ended.
