Its title, "Soldiers of the sea," frames the Marines as a naval force, and the record's caption list describes a range of shipboard and shore duties, from a five-inch gun crew and wireless telegraphy training to a battalion on duty at a national exposition. Issued in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it was one of many recruiting posters the Marine Corps used to fill its ranks during the mobilization. The artist, J.C. Leyendecker, was one of the best-known American illustrators of the period, famous for magazine covers and advertising, and his polished, idealized style gave the Corps a clean, appealing image for a public that was being asked to think about military service.
