Flagg's poster speaks to a specific audience: its text names the 17-to-35 age range and pitches the Navy as a path to training and travel rather than to combat. James Montgomery Flagg, best known for the "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster issued the same year, produced this color lithograph in 1917, when the United States had just entered the First World War. The record also notes a stamp from a Philadelphia recruiting office at 1515 Arch Street, a reminder that such posters were sent to local stations to draw in volunteers.
