The slogan on this 1917 lithograph, "The Navy Needs You! Don't Read American History, Make It!", turns a recruiting call into a challenge to the viewer's own role in history. James Montgomery Flagg, the illustrator best known for his Uncle Sam "I Want You" poster, designed it, and the H.C. Miner Lithographing Company of New York printed it. The United States had entered the First World War that April, and the Navy, like the Army, needed a rapid expansion of enlisted men. Posters like this one were displayed at recruiting stations to draw young men toward naval service.
