Uncle Sam's pointed finger and stern stare seem aimed straight at the viewer, and the text sets a firm deadline: on June 28th, Americans were asked to join the "army of war savers." Printed in New York by the American Lithographic Co. in 1918, the poster urged civilians to buy War Savings Stamps, which helped finance the U.S. war effort in World War I. James Montgomery Flagg, the illustrator behind the famous 1917 "I Want You" recruiting poster, reused the same familiar figure to make home-front saving feel as urgent as enlisting. The slogan casts the saver and the fighter as partners in the same cause.
