Rather than the usual flags and parade imagery, this 1917 lithograph ties Memorial Day to the country's war dead from the Revolution through the Spanish-American War, and it was issued in the spring the United States entered the First World War. The poster's title, "Honor the brave," and its notes naming soldiers of 1775 to 1783, 1812 to 1814, 1846 to 1847, 1861 to 1865, and 1898 show a deliberate effort to link the holiday's remembrance to the nation's ongoing wartime sacrifice. Wartime posters of this kind were used to rally civilians to buy bonds, support the war effort, and keep the memory of service in public view.
