Printed in 1917 for the 140th anniversary of the Continental Congress's June 14, 1777 resolution adopting the stars and stripes, this color lithograph is titled as the flag's birthday. It appeared the same year the United States entered the First World War, so it turns a holiday into wartime messaging, pairing the flag with a line from "The Star-Spangled Banner." The artist's monogram remains unidentified, but the poster belongs to a broader group of American war posters from the 1910s that used patriotic symbols to rally support at home. It is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection.
