This 1917 poster prints its appeal in Polish first and English second, with the Polish flag beside the call to "Enlist to-day." Its slogan, "For our liberty and yours," echoes a motto long associated with Polish patriotism and ties service in the American army to the hope of an independent Poland, which had been partitioned off the map for more than a century. Frances Adams Halsted is named as the designer, and the color lithograph was printed in St. Paul, Minnesota, the year the United States entered the First World War. Recruiting material like this targeted immigrant communities whose members often read Polish more easily than English.
