This Flag Day poster from 1915 comes from the Lincoln branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a charity that funded and staffed rescue boats along the British coast. Lincoln is far inland, so the branch raised money from city residents for crews it would never see. Flag Days were street-collection events in which volunteers sold small paper or cloth flags, and they were common across Britain during the First World War. Charities used them to raise money while many lifeboat crews were also at risk from wartime shipping hazards.
