Few recruiting posters from 1915 name a specific naval reserve unit as plainly as this one, which calls for men aged 18 to 38 to join the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve's Overseas Division as seamen and stokers. The red pencil note giving 129 Commissioner Street West, probably the recruiting office's address, shows how such posters were used locally after they were printed. The lithograph's images of warships and gun turrets reflect the Royal Navy's wartime importance and the role Canadian volunteers were expected to play in it. Stokers, who fed the boilers that powered steam warships, were in steady demand throughout the war.
