This text-only poster, headed to the young men of the Bahamas and printed in Kingston, Jamaica, makes its appeal entirely in words. Its printer, The Gleaner Company, was Jamaica's long-established newspaper and printing house, so the poster was likely produced locally rather than sent from Britain. Caribbean colonies sent volunteers to the war, and in 1915 the British West Indies Regiment was raised to serve in the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere. Recruiting notices like this one were part of an effort to draw men from across the empire into that service.
