The slogan borrows Horatio Nelson's signal before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, when he reminded his fleet that England expected every man to do his duty. Recruiters in 1915 hoped the line would stir the same sense of obligation. The poster advertised the Royal Naval Division, formed in 1914 from naval reservists and volunteers, many of them surplus to the fleet's needs, and organized into infantry battalions. Within months these men were fighting at Antwerp and then at Gallipoli, so a 1915 call to enlist carried immediate risk.
