The title names a Freischar, or volunteer band, called Loeschebrand, attached to the Garde-Kavallerie-Schützen-Division, a Berlin formation of the German army's Guards cavalry. Units like this were part of the Freikorps, paramilitary groups of demobilized soldiers and volunteers that the provisional government used in 1919 to help restore order during the political unrest that followed Germany's defeat in the First World War. Their posters often served as recruiting notices or as public announcements of a unit's presence, and they reflect how fragile and contested the young Weimar Republic was that year.
