Printed in Königsberg, an East Prussian city that lay near the Russian front, this 1915 poster draws on the figure of the "iron Wehrmann," an armored citizen-soldier long used in German imagery as a symbol of steadfast defense. Wartime posters like this were produced in large runs and displayed in streets, shops and public buildings to encourage enlistment and support for the war effort. Notice how the blend of martial symbolism with an appeal to ordinary people reflects the way the war was presented as a task for the whole society, not only the army.
