Lead with the central image: a helmeted German warrior grappling with a lion, a symbol of the British Empire that poster designers of the period often used to cast the enemy as a beast to be subdued. Posters like this one were part of Germany's effort to sell war bonds in 1918, when the government relied on public loans to fund a war that was entering its fourth year. Such posters pressed civilians to show patriotism by lending money to the state, and their bold graphic style, with strong diagonals and simple color, was designed to be read quickly on a street wall. Notice how the lion is shown as powerful yet overmatched, a visual argument the artist made for victory.
