The poster's particular link is its title, which invokes the Battle of Valmy, fought in September 1792, when a French revolutionary army halted a Prussian advance and helped secure the young republic. By 1918, French wartime lenders used that victory as a symbol of national endurance, and a 1918 appeal from a Paris bank drew on it to present a war loan as a patriotic duty. Look at how the design links the bank's name to the call for subscriptions, and how the historic reference was meant to make borrowing to fund the army feel like participation in a shared defense.
