This poster is set entirely in type, with no illustration, and it borrows its appeal from Admiral Horatio Nelson's signal before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, "England expects that every man will do his duty." Reusing that famous line asked men to see enlistment as a patriotic obligation, the same sense of national duty that had made Nelson a hero. The small royal armorial device of King George V at the top signals official backing for the call. Issued in London in 1914, it reflects the early months of the war, when Britain relied on volunteers to fill its expanding army before conscription was introduced in 1916.
