Printed in Hebrew, this 1918 Canadian recruiting poster speaks directly to Jewish men in Montreal, where Captain Isidor Freedman was enlisting men for an infantry reinforcement draft bound overseas. Its title, "Britain expects every son of Israel to do his duty," echoes Nelson's famous signal before Trafalgar and applies it to Britain's Jewish community. Three prominent British Jewish public figures, Herbert Samuel, Rufus Isaacs and Edwin Montagu, are tied to the appeal, giving it the authority of recognized leaders.
