This poster sets its message as a picture puzzle: the phrase "fight for your" is completed by a portrait of King George V and a map of Great Britain, which together read as "King and Country." The rebus format was meant to catch the eye and make a recruiting appeal feel personal and familiar. It was issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in London in 1915, when Britain relied on volunteers to fill the army and the government was still hoping men would enlist before conscription became law in 1916. The closing line, "before it is too late," shows the urgency the committee wanted to convey.
