This lithograph asks its question through a child's voice, with toy soldiers as the subject, so the viewer is pictured as the father who must answer. It was issued in 1915 by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, a body set up to encourage voluntary enlistment in Britain before conscription began in 1916. The poster is numbered 79 in its series and was printed by Johnson, Riddle & Co. of London. Its appeal rests on the imagined future: a father's answer to his child would be shaped by whether he had enlisted.
