Are you in this?" puts its question directly to the viewer, a pitch typical of the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, which ran Britain's voluntary enlistment campaign. The record credits the design to Lt. Gen. Sir R.S.S. Baden-Powell, the soldier best known as founder of the Boy Scout movement, and lists it as Poster No. 112, printed in London by Johnson, Riddle & Co. around 1917. By then conscription had been in force for about a year, but the government still sought volunteers, and posters like this tried to make enlistment and war work feel like a personal choice for each man and for the people around him.
