Join at once. Fight for the dear old flag" is a direct appeal to a man's sense of duty. This lithograph was issued in London in 1915 by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, which was set up that year to encourage voluntary enlistment as Britain's wartime army expanded. Conscription for men of military age was introduced in 1916, so posters like this one reflect the last stage of a voluntary system. Its patriotic message, built around the national flag, was typical of British recruiting material from the early years of the war.
