A plea addressed directly to the Virgin of Czestochowa sets this poster apart from the recruiting and war-loan images common on British walls in 1915. The icon, a dark-faced image of Mary kept at the Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra, has been Poland's most revered religious image for centuries, so invoking it spoke to a people whose homeland was torn apart by the fighting between German and Russian armies. Printed in London by Johnson, Riddle & Co., the color lithograph asked British donors to help Polish civilians left destitute by the war. It shows how wartime charity drew on religious devotion as well as national sympathy.
