Few recruiting posters from this period rely on words alone, and this one makes its case entirely through text. It calls for physically fit, hardy men aged 19 to 45, at least 5 feet 5 inches tall with a 35-inch chest, to join the Sportsman's Battalions. Its offer of separation allowance and army rate pay, along with the recruiting contact at the Hotel Cecil on the Strand, shows how the drive was pitched to men of athletic habit. Printed in London in 1915, it reflects the early war effort, when volunteers were still being sought in large numbers.
