Its appeal rests on a small, specific request: five shillings, to be handed in at the nearest Post Office. The poster, numbered "No. 4" in its series, asks ordinary people to lend the state modest sums toward the war loan. Britain paid for the First World War largely by borrowing, and the government's savings campaigns aimed to draw money from working families as well as wealthy investors. The lithograph was printed by Sir Joseph Causton & Sons of London for the Parliamentary War Savings Committee, and its plain slogan, "Help your country," shows how such campaigns tied private thrift to national duty.
