Officers of the 71st Highlanders, the Highland Light Infantry, pose before a row of bell tents in Crimea, placing them in the everyday surroundings of the campaign rather than a studio. Roger Fenton, the British photographer who went to Crimea in 1855 to record the war, made this salted paper print that year. His camp views favored orderly, composed scenes of officers and soldiers, offering a steadier picture of the conflict than the hardships of the siege. Salted paper prints required long exposures, so the sitters hold still, and the soft tones of the tents and uniforms are part of the image's character.
