Roger Fenton made this salted paper print in the Crimea in 1855, when he turned his camera on the Tatar men hired to build and repair roads around Balaklava, the harbor the British army relied on during its siege of Sevastopol. The record ties the scene to the army's construction work and to the 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, which places the labor squarely within the campaign's logistics. Fenton's Crimean photographs are often counted among the earliest pictures taken of an active war zone, and this one is a useful reminder that the army depended on local workers as well as on its own soldiers.
