Titled *The Lines of Balaclava*, this salted paper print shows the British military encampment around the port of Balaklava on the Crimean peninsula. Roger Fenton made it in 1855, during his months in the Crimea photographing the war on commission, while the siege of nearby Sevastopol dragged on. Fenton's pictures aimed to show the camps, supplies and everyday routines of the soldiers rather than the fighting itself. Salted paper, which gives softer detail and a warm brown tone, was a common printing method of the period.
