Annie Brown, the daughter of the abolitionist John Brown, is the subject of this cabinet card, which the catalog dates to sometime between 1860 and 1870. The title calls her the sole survivor of the Harper's Ferry raid, a description tied to the family's painful connection to the events of October 1859, when her father led a small band in an attack on the federal arsenal in Virginia. Cabinet cards became popular in the 1860s, offering a sturdier and larger format than earlier small portraits. Portraits like this one were often exchanged among family and supporters, which helped keep the memory of John Brown's family alive in the years after his execution.
