The November issue of *Harper's* magazine is the subject here, and the poster pairs a couple in 1890s dress, with the fashions of both the man and the woman serving as the record's main points of interest. Edward Penfield designed this 1894 color lithograph for Harper & Brothers, one of a series of monthly posters he made for the publisher. Penfield became one of the leading American poster artists of the decade, and his work relied on flat areas of bold color, simple outlines, and strong graphic shapes. Those qualities made these posters stand out on city hoardings and helped establish the modern American magazine poster.
