The Library of Congress catalogs this 1898 lithograph under women's clothing and dress of the 1890s, which sets it apart from many magazine posters of the period. Harper & Brothers issued it to promote the January number of *Harper's*, and its 48 by 34 centimeter sheet is printed in color. The artist signed it with a pictograph, a small symbolic mark used in place of a written name, a habit common among poster designers of the decade. Such posters were pasted on city walls and near bookstalls, so their bold color and simple shapes were meant to catch a passerby's eye in a few seconds.
