A monthly magazine advertisement becomes a showpiece in this 1893 lithograph promoting the June number of Harper's, with a woman and a cluster of roses filling the sheet in flat, saturated color. Edward Penfield, one of the most prominent American poster artists of the 1890s, worked during a wave of poster enthusiasm that followed the French example of Jules Chéret and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Publishers such as Harper & Brothers used posters like this to catch the eye of readers at newsstands and in shop windows. Penfield's clean outlines and limited palette, which let the image read from across a street, are worth noticing.
