Bernard Shea Horne's platinum print titled "Design" is a still life built around a cluster of daffodils, the flowers themselves serving as the subject rather than a setting or a story. Horne was associated with the Clarence H. White School of Photography, whose students in the 1910s favored soft tonal effects and arranged compositions over sharp documentary detail. The platinum process, prized by pictorialist photographers for its deep, velvety blacks and subtle gray range, suits the delicate petals and the careful balance of forms in this work. Dated to about 1917, the print reflects the period's interest in photography as a fine art.
