A bright color poster announcing the June number of *Harper's*, the New York monthly that was one of the most widely read general magazines of its day. Printed around 1899, it belongs to a boom in American color lithography, when publishers commissioned large, eye-catching posters for city streets and shop windows. The floral subject ties the advertisement to the season, using early-summer blooms to suggest the magazine's arrival in readers' homes. Posters like this show how commercial art of the 1890s combined decorative design with the business of selling periodicals.
