The Venus de Milo, the marble statue of Aphrodite carved in the Hellenistic period and found on the Aegean island of Melos in 1820, is the subject of this gelatin silver print, which dates to around 1960. The statue's missing arms have long been part of its appeal, and the work has been one of the most reproduced sculptures in the world since it entered the Louvre in 1821. A photograph of it from the middle of the twentieth century reflects how the figure was studied, displayed and circulated in that era, when museum views and photographic reproductions carried classical art to a wide public.
