Rather than a portrait of one person, this picture shows Apsaroke, or Crow, riders on horseback in Montana, a scene the title, *The Spirit of the Past*, presents as a look back at a way of life already changing. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1908 for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as plate 122 in volume 4. Curtis often arranged costumes and settings for his camera, so the riders reflect his idea of tradition as much as daily life in that decade. The Crow were skilled horsemen of the northern plains, and horses were central to their travel, hunting, and ceremonial life, which makes the mounted figures worth studying closely.
