Here the supporters of Eugene J. McCarthy take the place of the fife player, the drummer, and the battered veteran from Archibald Willard's 1876 painting *The Spirit of '76*. McCarthy, the Minnesota senator who challenged President Lyndon Johnson for the Democratic nomination in 1968, drew many young volunteers to his antiwar campaign, and the poster casts them as patriots marching for their cause. Willard's centennial painting had become a staple of Fourth of July imagery, so the satire works only if viewers recognize the original at a glance.
