Proposition 19 on the 1972 California ballot asked voters to decriminalize marijuana, and this poster was issued by the California Marijuana Initiative to urge a yes vote. The measure would have removed criminal penalties for adults who possessed small amounts of the drug or grew it at home, making it one of the first statewide tests of whether a major state would move away from prohibition. Voters rejected it by a wide margin, but the campaign drew national attention and shaped the debate over marijuana laws that followed.
