Three women, Brenda Putnam, Maria Roemaet, and Edith Rubel, are named in this platinum print as performers, and the title "The prelude" suggests a musical opening, a piece played before the main work. The image belongs to the 1910s, when women's chamber ensembles built on stringed instruments were a common subject for photographers and concert audiences alike. Platinum printing, prized for its soft gradations of gray, was a favored process of the period. The copyright deposit date of October 15, 1917, shows the photograph was submitted for registration that autumn.
