Scott Hooper, a man formerly enslaved and later living in Fort Worth, Texas, was photographed on November 9, 1937, as part of a Works Progress Administration project. The small gelatin silver print belongs to a series of portraits of older African Americans who had lived through slavery, made as the Federal Writers' Project gathered first-person accounts from people born in bondage during the 1930s. The portraits were meant to accompany these life histories, so the sitter's face and bearing stand alongside his spoken memories of the period. Viewed today, the picture is a record of a generation that was then nearing the end of its lives.
