Vicksburg, a river city on the Mississippi, is the setting for this 1936 view of houses in a district the title calls a "Negro quarter," a phrase that reflects the segregation-era language of its time. The Farm Security Administration sent photographers across the South during the Depression to document housing and living conditions, and pictures like this one were meant to show federal officials and the public how people actually lived. Look at the small, closely spaced dwellings and the people standing among them. The scene records the crowded housing that many Black families in the Jim Crow South were forced to accept.
