The title's date, 18 July 1936, marks the military uprising against the Spanish Republic that started the civil war. This poster was printed in Barcelona under the names of the UGT and the CNT, two major labor federations that backed the republic. In Barcelona, workers' militias helped defeat the rising in the city during its first days, which gives the date particular weight for the poster's makers and audience. Its listed subjects, casualties and military personnel, suggest how such wartime posters used the anniversary to honor the dead and rally support for the republic.
